Meet Halifax’s Musical Director: Patricia Tupper
Patricia Guy Tupper has been a Music Educator since 1980, performing roles as Music Teacher, Classroom Teacher and most recently as School Administrator. Throughout her varied career, she has always sung in and conducted choirs in her spare time. From the earliest days of her undergraduate degree at Dalhousie University, she has taught singing at the Convent of the Sacred Heart, conducted numerous children’s choirs, and has sung in and conducted many adult church choirs throughout the Halifax area. As a student, Patricia was hired to train 20 non-singing dancers to sing for the national traveling show of ‘Meet the Navy'. Traveling to Lunenburg every week for 4 years to conduct The South Shore Chorale, Patricia has always relied on her husband John to be her chauffeur and her favourite bass. For 22 years they sang together in the Saint Mary’s Cathedral Basilica as lead singers. Over those 22 years, Patricia became Assistant Conductor and for the past 15 years, Music Director of St. Mary’s Gallery Choir - a position from which she retired in August of 2022.
Patricia is part of a legacy at the Royal Nova Scotia International Tattoo. Her father, Capt (N) Guy, was on the organizing committee for the first Tattoo in 1979, providing substantial military support. Patricia has been involved since 1983 singing with the Adult Choir, which she now directs, and the Children’s Chorus, which she founded in 1984 and directed until 2010. A particular highlight for her was the formation of the first Military Wives Choir who made their debut in the 2012 Tattoo. For her contributions to volunteerism and music culture in Nova Scotia, Patricia was awarded the Platinum Jubilee Medal from the late Queen, Queen Elizabeth ll.
A wife, mother and grandmother, Patricia now devotes herself to being a substitute Administrator in schools in the HRM and when not working, she spends her time studying the piano.
Patricia has completed one successful season as Music Director and thoroughly enjoys being able to make music with a very dedicated and enthusiastic group of female singers!
Choir Performances
Our choir enjoys a busy year filled with meaningful performances. We are honoured to sing for our veterans at the Camphill facility three times annually and to perform at various Remembrances Day ceremonies through HRM, including the Woodlawn Public Library.
You may also find us TV during the Christmas Daddies Telethon, performing at St. Brendan Faith Centre during their annual Lesson and Carol service, singing in a Christmas tree, and collaborating with others choirs at the Halifax Central Library.
Each spring, we present our own concert, participate in the Battle of Atlantic service, and join the Greenwood and Gagetown Canadian Military Wives choirs during our annual retreat.
We are especially proud that the members of our choir have represented us at the Royal Nova Scotia International Tattoo, Invictus Games closing ceremonies in 2025 and the Remembrance Day service in Washington DC in 2023.
